I kind of can't even imagine how my life would feel without the presence of magazines. I know it may take years, but I foresee them going the way of corded phones and it makes my heart sink a bit. I'm an online girl with a feel for paper. Ah, Life.
Helen Twelevetrees was an actress of stage and screen in the '20s and '30s. She took roles in talkies when the regular stable of silent actresses refused. As famous for her tumultuous three marriages as for her acting, Twelvetrees was described by some as having the saddest eyes they had ever seen. Her style veers from total doll to tomboy and that's the mix I most admire.
A sad-eyed, pretty blond with a heart for trouble and a love of glamour is just about all the fashion inspiration I need right now.
Collectors, hoarders, and bloggers are all kindred spirits. I've stumbled upon the site of Millie Motts, a self-described "collector of 1940-60s just-about-anything." Her blog is full of fashion mag scans, vintage ads, and illustrations from days gone by. It's a feast for a fashion lover's eyes like mine. Her site feels like home.
The runways are cloaked in black this season. Something dark has shown up all over Fashion Week(s). It got me thinking about my first exposure to the darkside which was none other than the mega-glam, goth goddess Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. I was pretty obsessed with her way back in the day. Her and her big hair and her dark makeup and massive...hair showed a totally different possibility for women and their appeal. She was bossy and brash and I kind of wanted to be her (just for a hot minute after midnight). So, in honor of our second Friday the 13th in a month I offer a behind the scenes look at the life and times of Elvira.
And some bloopers, because they are funny.
Admit it, you still want to be Elvira don't you? Click the images below to get yourself a costume and some fake lashes. Follow the directions below and call it a (wild) night.
Even amid increasing economic uncertainty, a well heeled sector of the population still needs a hell of a lot of glamor in their closets, and Toni Maticevski's gowns could provide them with a lifetime supply. The Australian designer unveiled his collection in the lobby of the beautiful Hotel Roger Williams, where the models bravely descended a flight of metal stairs. I say forget the comfortable robes; clear the closets and stock my suite with gorgeous gowns. If I had my way, I'd slip on one of those sheer lace numbers, sip a few glasses of minibar champagne, and never check out. A girl can live on glamor and room service alone. Well, this one would at least like to try.
