Go To Sleep, Pretty Baby.

Before people carried the Internet in their pockets, back in 2000 when it was still a newish medium just settling into the everyday lives of everyday folks, fashion genius photographer art mind Nick Knight co-founded SHOWstudio. It's a creative think tank of sorts where virtual media plays all nicey-nice with that immortal Siamese twin art/fashion. The projects that SHOWstudio conceives of and produces endeavor to showcase the creative process from start to finish, and their efforts have consistently pushed boundaries and raised quality standards throughout the site's years-long existence. One of the first major projects Knight and his team produced fully capitalized on the global connectivity and voyeuristic nature of the Internet. They invited nine top models to a hotel in London and primped and prepped them just as they would for any photoshoot--then they got them into bed. No, nothing untoward happened, in fact something beautiful happened.

As viewers logged on to watch the girls slumber via webcams in real time, the models slept a night's sleep in giant hotel beds. In their states of tossing slumber their hair came loose and their makeup smudged and their dresses twisted and tightened and their sheets wrinkled around them. The models' dishevelment became poetic images and time lapse films of women unraveling for all to see. The project produced both gorgeous moments in real time, and beautiful final images of silent moments stilled for good.

Check out the full project here. I am the biggest SHOWstudio fan and encourage you all to peek in on them and their genius regularly. They innovate, pioneer, and entertain with pretty playfulness. It's really something to witness.

Tuck Me In

You know how on MTV's Cribs there is always the inevitable scene where the featured celeb takes a running jump onto their bed and says, "This is where the magic happens!" Well, I've always secretly wanted to do that but first I need a magical bed. I'm in the process of pimping my sleep space and I'm half way there. I made a trip to Ikea yesterday and scooped up a very reasonable duvet cover. I picked up the Bibbi Snurr (I swear that half the reason why I love Ikea so, so much is due to the names I get to call things) with a Vila fitted sheet in purple to go underneath.

I like the Bibbi Snurr because it kind of looks like a cross between eyes, peacock feathers, and these swirly little doodles that I incessantly draw, and a purple sheet seemed eggplanty and passionate. I do love eggplant.

Now I need the accouterments. And, I know just where to get them. Genius screenprint mecca Reckon has many a great pillow that I'd love to lay my head on. Here are some I'm considering:

A little Audrey, maybe some John Cleese, or Tom Waits? I mean the options for sleeping companions are just fantastic. And, I'm pretty sure you could make a request to have any of the images featured in Reckon's repertoire turned into cushiony goodness. So, pick a partner and cozy up. If anyone knows the Cribs casting people, tell 'em I'm fun and I'm ready and my whole apartment is gilded in 24karat gold.

Bust Out the Jams

Baby, it's cold outside. Or, at least it was cold outside until weird global warming weather returned. For the sake of the polar bears, I can only hope that the thermostat dips again and normal winter makes a come back. When the frost does return, you'll need some comfy sleepwear. Pajamas are one of life's little luxuries. Sure, you could slumber in that old "Brooke's Susperstar Bat Mitzvah!" tee and those old gym shorts, but puffy paint can be terribly itchy and you deserve a little comfort in these tough times. When I was younger there was a television commercial for laundry detergent that featured a woman trading in her own nightie for her husband's flannel pajamas. Ever since then, I've bee-lined for the men's section when I need a new sleepwear option. Cozy, over-sized, and soft (but not too soft! Slippers are pajamas for your feet. Keep the tooties toasty pre-sleep with these candy-striped booties from Old Navy, $15


One piece sleepwear is a personal favorite. I'm a tosser-and-turner and sometimes my PJ's turn straitjacket in the middle of the night. A onesie keeps things in place. Also makes me feel like I'm in Never Never Land and adulthood is an option, not an obligation. Get this union suit from Target, $19.99.
