Good Face

Artist Jen Mann gives good face. Her print work and paintings are the love children of a high fashion magazine and the prime of the pagan planet. Her pretty subjects have the bone structure of perfect creatures, and the animals she sometimes coaxes out of their ethereal surroundings (or their skulls) are equally perfected.

While the imagery elements (howling wolf, pretty woman) could easily have come from that hippie/suburban spirit shop on Main St., Manning's soft renderings of bold features keeps her work well in the realm of higher art. You can see more of her work at her website and on her blog.

Twist for me, lil darlin'.

I love these hair portraits by Etsy seller nosideup. Prints are available for $20.00. A customized sketch of your own updo can be yours for $75.00. Peruse her shop for other delights such as paper bling and your very own "it" bag. To be cool like her, follow her blog.

Go For A Spin

Artist/Illustrator/Frequent Fashion Collaborator (can I have that title on my business cards, please?) Julie Verhoeven is one of my favorites. She does work with an undeniable edge but it's always so softly feminine, like women themselves. A not-so-subtle streak of sexuality runs through her inky washes and colorful creatures, and she draws eyes nice and big-just the way I like 'em! I'm not going to spill all of her beans just yet because I want to write about her again and again. The below video is your first taste. It was originally conceived as background visuals for a music/art performance by the Gingerbread Men. In it Julie makes eyes at you out of all sorts of vapory visuals. Watching her paint backwards at around the seven minute mark is full-on fantastic.

It's called Knee Deep in Your Eyes.
