Spin Shine.
Scraper Bikes are cooler than you. It doesn't really matter how cool you are, they are just cooler than you. Once you get over that, you should watch this docu-vid and see what I mean:
See? Those spokes shine with a higher purpose. Not only do they look all blingy and fresh, but those bikes also save lives. In order to maintain membership of The Original Scraper Bike Team you have to pass muster with your wheels, learn to obey the single file ride rule, and maintain a 3.0 GPA in school. I approve whole-heartedly. Inner City good will and glam have never gone together quite so well. Here's some more shots of kids' custom wheels:
I wonder if I can apply for an absentee membership?I found directions on how to Scrape my bike on the Internets. Wait, I don't have a bike...yet! To be continued.

One/One-Thousand: Peggy Sirota
I bet Peggy Sirota is a huge dork. I mean that in the nicest way possible. In fashion photography there is such a push to make things cool, sexy, hot, desirable. Untouchable really. Peggy makes things sweet, sunny, fun, and full of smiles. Some of her images--especially her recent work for GQ--proves that her brand of dorky can be sexy too. But mostly, Sirota's work just feels genuinely happy-making. Her career has spanned decades. She used to be a heavy presence at Rollingstone in the '90s, and she gave Jane magazine it's aesthetic in its beginning days. Smiles are timeless though, and as long as she continues to shoot shining shots of beaming kiddies and pretty faces, I'm sure her portfolio will just grow and grow.

Look, Ma! No Bangs!
I love kids. I especially love when they cut their own hair. I used to work with kids and it happens all the time. They always have a very good reason for doing it too. A few tops that I've heard over the years:
1) My bangs were tickling my eyes.
2) I wanted to look like daddy (she had gorgeous long curls).
3) It's beautiful what I did. I look beautiful.
I recently let my friend Fay, who is very talented, cut my bangs for me. It came out great, but the lo-fi experience in her kitchen gave me flashbacks to when I myself chopped off my own ponytail in my mother's bathroom with her scissors. It made perfect sense at the time. I'm sure all of these kids I found on Flickr also had very good reasons for their self-inflicted hair cuts.
