Miuccia Prada's Spring/Summer 2010 collection was all cut seams and raw hems at first.
The grayish black coats, pants, shorts, and tops that meandered down the black and white runway were pressed flat, with crisp pleats and a sheen. The shapes were deceptively simple in their flatness, giving the clothes a stiff character, but then the backs of the garments slightly draped or jetted away from the models' bodies.
By using circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and the occasional flourish of a twist, Prada eschewed the overwhelming trend towards flouncy drapery and frilly fuss that's been on every catwalk of late. Then, amidst the heavy, shiny grays a beach scene emerged.
Prints of a hazy, faded, seaside setting relieved the darkness and gave the clothes a pop of paradise. Yet, the sulfurous yellow and smoggy, smoke-colored washes on the prints either aged the scene, making it look like a distant memory, or took some of the carefree levity out of the usual beach ephemera. The blankets, umbrellas, sunbathers, and palm trees are rendered in washed out hues. Prada's prints say maybe we can find a bright landscape again once the clouds pass; but, if they don't pass, then we'll have to make due. We'll have to paint our pouts a bright red hue, muss our hair, and just find a new cool.
The crystal pieces, I'm sure, were much more effective in person. But even without the shimmer and dazzling shine of the chandelier-like wares in the photos, you can tell that the bejeweled shift dresses and bedazzled separates were intended to offer clear light. A sparkly refresher after a hazy sunset.
LOVES IT.

Your Lips Look Like They're On Fire.
I'm loving Kid A's "wasnotwas" too, too much. It's my red lipstick theme song. It's ringing through my head and setting my lips on fire all day long. Mmmmm, what a song: disco-funk-flip-hop-scratch-sniff-repeat with desire drenched lyrics delivered by a sweet little voice. I like it.
Kid A is Anni T, a 21 year old music super star from Virgina. She's the type of musician I love, a tinkerer with sound making toys and talent. The internet is exploding with the kind of raw talent that used to be on display before PR became the biggest name in the entertainment game and every songstress had to have hair extensions, dance skillz, and a rockin' six-pack. I love the high-tech=lo-fi, DIY time I live in; it's letting lots of talent shine through the cracks in the glitz-n-glam bigmachine's floor boards.
I hate saying things like that and feeling like I'm insulting the people I'm praising for not being hotties-with-bodies. Anni is gorgeous, cool and may very well be a super dancer, but I'm just saying she's not your typical starlet, which I absolutely love. Get it done Kid A, get it done!

Ok, Call Me Obsessed.
I'm a blogger, if I wasn't obsessive, I wouldn't be any good at what I do! I found yet another tutorial on the "perfect red lip" and I have to share it with you. I really would never do all of this shading and powdering and lining, I'm just not that HM, but any makeup video set to the lovely, dulcet tones of Brass Monkey by the Beastie Boys (Get Well Soon, Adam!) deserves a re-post! Also, you have gotta love Jonny Cosmetic's big "la la la" finish.
Ha.

Passionate Kisses.
Poppy King, The Lipstick Queen! She's a brilliant business woman with a passion for all things lip-related and I feel good about spending my hard-to-come-by bucks on her great cosmetics. She started her own lipstick company out of her home when she was just a High School grad and has built her business into a $2 million a year operation. Even in this dismal economy her sales are up, way up, 34% up! That's big. Why? Well, let her tell you...
It is always so inspiring to me to see entrepreneurial women making a killing in the business world. She's a dynamo. Her story is a success to pattern yourself after and her products are thoughtfully, well-made. There are no gimmicks, no over the top over-promises, no crazy bee ess, just color-filled pencils, sticks, glosses, and pots that provide great shades in lasting formulas. Need to know more? Poppy'll give you a lipstick lesson.
I'm choosing the Red Sinner, because I'm that badass. Or, maybe I'll pick up Sinner and Saint so I can choose my level of badassness on a day to day basis. Either way, this is going to be fun...
