Baby, You Still Look Good.

This morning my friend Sam and I sipped our Starbucks next to a little girl in a hot pink cape over a tutu and a tee that said "Drama Queen". Her brazen self-styled expression gave me a craving for another edition of Kids Who Dress Themselves. I'm a fan of the Flickr pool with the same name. There's something too fun about kids throwing together outfits. They love to mismatch their shoes and add head gear. It's great.

Layer, especially over striped shirts.

Who needs pants? Seriously, she's the next Gaga.

I love this pumpkin picking outfit.

Don't forget your mom's shades. She's an Olsen's bff.

The rules, besides that there are none, seem to be:

1) Something has to sparkle.
2) Layering is a must.
3) Birthday hats aren't just for birthdays.
4) Halloween costumes aren't just for Halloween.

Your bikini is perfect winter wear.

This girl knows how to make the best of her dance costumes and birthday hats.

Halloween is never over. Never.

The best accessories always sparkle, or taste like chocolate.

Is it wrong to have a kid just so I can let them dress themselves? Say no.

They Run This Place.

The Sartorialist does his most amazing work during the various world-wide Fashion Weeks, which I guess actually happens to be more weeks out of the year than not. And, let's face it, The Sartorialist can do no wrong in my book. He's done particularly right in snapping two photos of fashionable kiddliewinks here on the mean streets of New York.

I have a soft spot for kids who dress themselves, and while the jury is still out on whether these two have personal stylists to handle their wardrobes, I will still enjoy the possibility that they in fact picked these getups themselves. How much do you wanna bet that someday in the future there will be a Pre-Tween Vogue on the stands? I would wager my perfect fitting jeans. That's serious.

Baby, You Look Good!

As soon as I was tall enough (on tippy-toe and with a step-stool) to reach the top drawer of my dresser, you better believe I was picking out my own outfits. I have more vivid memories of my childhood clothing than I do of most of my little playmates. That turquoise blue, embroidered, washed silk pantsuit I insisted on wearing to pre-school picture day? The metallic silver bathing suit cover-up I cried for until my Bubbie bought it for me the summer of kindergarden? The obsession kicked in early. I love passing by kids on the streets of New York who have obviously dressed themselves. It always makes me smile so big. So, imagine my delight when I discovered there is a whole flickr pool dedicated to kids who dressed themselves! Check out the mini-mavens:

I should hire them to dress me.

Kidding Around

This is golden. It's a copy of a kindergarten year book photo from my alma mater, Littleton Elementary School. A friend of mine's sister is a member of this sharply dressed class of 1969, and when he showed it to me I knew I had to share it with you. Click the image to enlarge the photo and check out the stylin' duds these kids are rocking. I love the blond kid in the top row, third from left. Those glasses are so classy with that turtleneck! And the ties and colors on the rest of the kids? Too good. Don't miss Mrs. Zulauf, top left. Her collar is seriously out of this groovy world.

Kid Stuff

Violet and Ruby Phillips are the 7 and 9 year old daughters of kids clothing designer Eliza Gran. They give the Times the lowdown on their wardrobes and style icons. Girls, I couldn't agree more: I've also always aspired to look like Pippi Longstocking.
