Ruh-Ro.
Dear Mulleavy Sisters,
I will never stop loving you. Never. You of the wittiest knits, of the blood and guts inspiration, you of the spiderweb tights and the stake-in-the-heart heels. I will never, never not love you. But. But. But. This latest collection was not your best work. I'm not trying to make you feel guilty, or bad about yourselves, but I am trying to make sure this doesn't happen again. You put a whole collection together based on the idea of getting dressed in the dark. Flip the switch and catch a glimpse of the mash-up.
Your craftsmanship is a wonder to behold. Do not question this. Your patchwork pastiche is always a showcase of some damn fine handiwork. Those sweaters that look like thick, loomed yarn? Gorgeous. Those strands of pearls strung sideways over the shoulders? Nice. But all of that mashed together with an ill fit and some ghostly makeup? Not so nice. This is tough love for my favorite pair. I have faith that you'll return in top form next season. Total faith. 'Til then? I have to speak my truth.

Three's A (Great) Crowd.
The indomitable Suzy Menkes takes a guided tour through the Rodarte installation at Paris' Colette shop.

Rags To Riches.
The fact that Rodarte shows as a ready to wear concern is quite astonishing. The much loved sister act of Laura and Kate Mulleavy get their hands dirty in every single scrap of fabric they use to construct their incredible garments. The shredding, dyeing, stitching, smudging, scaling, sanding, and staining are all done by the ladies of the line. The results are incredible to see in person. In fact, I venture to say that if you are a fashion fan, you haven't quite lived until you've experienced a Rodarte garment up close, with all of your senses, especially your fingertips. Theirs are the only garments I've seen in a long time that don't induce rage at a high price tag. You can see the work, the time, the effort in their clothing. It's a work of art, and priced accordingly.
This season the ladies showed a collection that emerged from a runway clouded in green mist. With the backstory of abandoned women crafting together their own wears from bits and pieces of found clothing after an encounter with some detrimental forces, the show featured overtones of warrior women. Inked in thick black tattoos and donning black-blood-red lips, the post apocolypse catwalk looked punk rock and heavy metal. Studded, zipped poured on pants met ankle high, equally studded stilletos that can only be called hardcore. Dresses were pieced together of variously tortured fabrics.
It's interesting to me that the clothes actually swirl around a sentiment that's been popping up in fashion coverage lately, the idea of streetpeople as inspiration. I'm not talking about hip streetstyle, I'm talking about actual homeless people. People who make outfits out of something most would think of as nothing. There was a recent article penned by Cathy Horyn in The New York Times about this very subject and I think the Rodarte collection falls right in line with this. Now, the juxtapoition of those down on their luck and dwellingless, and the superriche garments of a design duo that go for thousands on the well constructed minimalist floors of Barney's isn't made as an insensitive or naive comparison. I'm not saying that the homeless are cute, fashion source material. Not in a trite way, at least.
In terms of the Rodarte collection, the idea that the materials were treated as scraps and refuse individually and brought together to make something functional, something beautiful, is really what draws the line of conncetion. Well, okay, maybe not the straightest line. Let's scale back on the severity a bit. How about the idea of making the best of what you have, when you don't have much? That's the place a lot of us shoppers are finding ourselves in now. Without the disposable income, our disposable clothing is also not being disposed of quite so often. How do you take what you wish you could get rid of, what you were intending to wear once and toss, and make it fresh? New? Like new? If you are the Mulleavys you weave and stitch and sew. You dye and bedazzle and wrap. You shred and burn and scissor. You make materials raw and you build things anew from scratch.
That is what I love so much about Rodarte. You can see the creativity so evidently, so clearly, so wonderfully. Also, they seem like they would be excessively cool to hang out with.

Fashion Week Is Coming! Fashion Week Is Coming!
It was the night before New York Fashion Week started, and all through the house... Anna was so effing excited!
I love this shot from the New York Times today of the pre-show start photo shoot by Patrick Demarchelier in front of the Bryant Park tents. It juices me up for the festivities. Of course, you can count on I Want To Wear It. to bring you all of the up to the minute coverage of all of the fun, feathers, fur, ferocity, fedoras, fans, famousness, Ferraris, and ferrets. All of it. Right here. Starting with tomorrow's huge 5-borough-wide partay hosted by Anna Wintour, Fashion's Night Out.
I'm personally heading over to Opening Ceremony for their block party that will feature the work of my fashion fetishes, The Mulleavy Sisters, as well as Alexander Wang and other designers. But, if you'd rather ogle MK and A, Zac Posen, Victoria Beckham, and ALT, you can head on over to Bergdorf's uptown. Or, get a lip reading by Poppy King the Lipstick Queen at Barneys, or you can see a Little Red Riding Hood recreation put together by Grace Coddington at Prada. Oh dear, if only I could clone myself a couple Annas. There's so much to do! Listen, tomorrow you will be golden no matter where you are! It's gonna be a blast. You should wear good shoes (walkable people, no sky high stilettos!) and be prepared to make the rounds. I can't wait!
Check out the official Fashion's Night Out schedule here.

The Wee Blogger.
Tavi's blog, Style Rookie, or Tavi-The New Girl In Town, is a mosh of snaps of her own outfits, her sources of inspiration, her self-scribed 'zine pages, and all the things she finds rad in the world. And, I, well, I love it. I guess because the girl is so charming, she smothers any of my fiery jell-o-c (SHE HUNG OUT WITH KATE AND LAURA MULLEAVY FOR A WHOLE DAY!!!) in cute, glorious, innate fashionableness.
Tavi's only Bar Mitzvah age and she already knows who Rei Kawakubo is. I did too at that age, so I totally know where the girl is coming from. I want to appeal to ration and say that I think the child needs an age-appropriate hobby or existence, and that she's too young to be a fashion industry darling, but I think all chances of that have been flying out the window for some time now. When your 13 year old is well versed in the films of John Waters, the music of Bob Dylan, the designs of Hussein Chalayan, and the art of the galaxies, I think you just accept that you have an old soul for a kid and go with it. At 13 she's about a year shy of model age and she's obviously enjoying herself. Who knows, maybe fashion blogging is just the millennial dress up.
Tavi, I applaud you. You are a star. I will no longer smite you with ignorance, instead I will sing your praises. Rock on little lady, rock on.

I See You In Pictures.
You can learn a lot about people through their taste in movies. The Sisters Mulleavy, Kate and Laura of Rodarte, were once asked to compile a list of their Top 10 films from The Criterion Collection. A Jean Cocteau version of Beauty and The Beast mingles with Jonathan Demme's Silence of The Lambs and they both share space with a few fine examples of French cinema. It's all very telling and makes me want to rush to update my Netflix list to include the sisters' selections. Their aesthetic is one of my favorites in all of fashion, so I'd trust their taste in films any day. Click the above picture to head on over to the Ladies' entire list. You can even stream some of the trailers for the films right there. Go ahead, go ahead! The Mulleavys are calling! I'm sure they'll pop you some popcorn if you ask nicely.

And The Winner is...
Rodarte! The Mulleavy's owned the Oscars if you ask me. Two of the night's biggest and brightest wore their creations and looked great.
I'm so happy that they were well represented. Their designs are gorgeous enough to be classic glam, and interesting enough to satisfy the serious fashion eye in me. Their vision is so unique, yet toned down a bit it translated well on the Red Brick Road to Oscar Land. Yay for them, yay for us.

I Hearte Rodarte.
You all know by now that I want to be the third Mulleavy sister. In fact, I think I may be and they just don't know it. Anyways, their latest collection is collaged, layered, wrapped, and influenced by monsters. Just the way I like it. I'm worried that any more effusive declarations of love for them, in combo with the statements above, may qualify me for stalker status, so I'm going to just briefly share a few of my favorite highlights from the show here...
The orangey-red hair:
Which according to a NYTimes backstage photo, I could do at home with a can of spray stuff. Yay!!

The wicked Nickolas Kirkwood thigh-high, leather, strappy, wrappy boots.

Yum. They always have the hottest, most fetish-inspiring footwear of anyone. Kirkwood is a genius. I don't know how anyone walks in his shoes, but they look amazing. These do seem to require a bit of extra help though...

Sister Act
The Mulleavy Sisters got some love on The Medium, The Times's TV/media blog written by Virginia Heffernan, for being "awesome and strange sister geeks." I think it's intended as a very high compliment. You already know that I love Rodarte and the Mulleavys almost as much as a fat kid loves cake, so watching them talk about their Asian horror film and blood-soaked cloth inspirations is pure joy for me, and apparently for Heffernan as well. Give it a viewing:
Such a good reminder that the people who are really talented in the fashion industry are not in it to look better than you, to be an image, to be pretentious. They are passionate and talented and in love with what they do. I heart them so much.
