I Looked Good, Dammit!
I was fashion folio hunting at the Strand the other day when I came across The Height of Fashion, this fabulous book from 2000 where Lisa Eisner asked the famous (Gina Gershon, Sofia Coppala, Dennis Hopper) and not so famous to send in photos of themselves at the moment they felt most stylish. The results are oh so funny and often touching. There are lots of prom photos, lots of "Look, Ma! I dressed myself!" childhood snaps, and tons of outfits that should have been left in the dressing room. But everyone looks so happy and self-satisfied.
The book's out of print, but the Strand's got you covered.
